God is Faithful

The Lord is fire, He is wise, He loves, He will judge and He is faithful. As the world around us has changed over the centuries, so has faithfulness. God, who embodies faithfulness, created the world to be faithful. We read, again and again, in the Bible, that nature, everything that is around us, is obedient and faithful to the Lord. The mountains quake before God and the hills melt away (Nahum 1:5), the sea does not rise over the limit that God has given to it (Proverbs 8:29) and the valleys sing for joy to the Lord (Psalm 65:13). Nature acts this way because it acknowledges God as its creator. God also created mankind to be faithful. God's intention was for Adam and Eve to be faithful to Him, but, instead, they betrayed His trust, they took His faithfulness for granted.

Since the time of Adam and Eve, mankind has found more ways to be unfaithful. Sometimes partners betray each other, friends do not remain faithful to one another, organisations deceive their customers, and the list goes on and on. Whilst faithfulness is still very much prized by some, and is as important to God as it always has been, there are a lot of people in the world who seem to embrace faithlessness instead. A lot of people do not want to be faithful in relationships, because they like having lots of partners and being 'independent'. Some people don't honour friendships because they don't feel like putting in the effort. A lot of organisations care more about making money than being faithful to morality.

However, just because mankind struggles to be faithful, doesn't mean God struggles with being faithful. The Bible reiterates so many times just how faithful our Lord is. I mean, just look at God's grandest display of His faithfulness: whilst we were still sinners, He sent His beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. He sacrificed His most precious possession so that we might be reconciled to Him, so that we could gain access to Him again, through His act of faithfulness.

The scriptures below explore the fact that being faithful is an inherent part of God's personality, that God's faithfulness to us, as His children, endures and that His faithfulness protects us.

Faithfulness is an integral part of who God is

“If we are faithless, He remains faithful— for He cannot deny himself.”
2 Timothy 2:13

“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
Hebrews 10:23

“For the word of the Lord is upright, and all His work is done in faithfulness.”
Psalm 33:4

“By faith Sarah herself received power to conceive, even when she was past the age, since she considered Him faithful who had promised.”
Hebrews 11:11

“He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and buckler.”
Psalm 91:4

"For this reason He had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that He might make atonement for the sins of the people."
Hebrews 2:17

"But Christ is faithful as the Son over God’s house. And we are His house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope in which we glory."
Hebrews 3:6

"...and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by His blood..."
Revelation 1:5

"I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice He judges and wages war."
Revelation 19:11

His faithfulness endures

“Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations”
Deuteronomy 7:9

“What if some were unfaithful? Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God? Not at all!”
Romans 3:3-4

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”
Lamentations 3:22-23

"The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it."
1 Thessalonians 5:24

His faithfulness protects us

“But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.”
2 Thessalonians 3:3

“No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will hear you. You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart.”
Jeremiah 29:11-13

"So then, those who suffer according to God’s will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good."
1 Peter 4:19

You see? God will always be faithful. It's His nature. And He uses His faithfulness to ensure that His glory is glorified, that morality, goodness and justice will always win in the end and to help us as His children. He wants us to trust in His faithfulness. To depend on it, both when times are tough and when they are easier. As followers of Jesus, we are promised persecution. God doesn't say our lives are going to be easy, but He says He will be faithful to us throughout eternity. This is something in which to rejoice!

As followers of Jesus, we need to, not only trust in His faithfulness, but to increase our faithfulness to Him. Are we doing His will? Are we praying to Him as we should be? Are we listening to His responses? Are we reading the Bible and learning from it? Are we helping others in righteous ways? Are we denying ourselves and glorifying Him? Are we repenting of sin? Are we telling others about Him? Are we professing Him as our glorious Hope?

Are we having relationship with Him? Think of all your other relationships, think of the amount of time you spend with those people in your lives, the emotions your pour out onto them, the sacrifices you make for them and the love you have for them. If God is your Father, your Lord, your Saviour, your Desire, then think of how much more you should have relationship with Him. He really wants relationship with you. He is the King of faithfulness.

  1. This is awesome. I usually think about our faithfulness, not the faithfulness of God. Really like the Timothy passage!
